PSYCHOTHERAPY DELIVERY

The Alabama Institute for Behavioral Health, P.C. delivers services through two means.  First, we follow the traditional method of psychotherapy that is in-person and directly with your counselor in the clinic.  The second method is via the latest level of technology that includes telehealth.

TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY OFFERED

  • PROLONGED EXPOSURE THERAPY [PE]
    • Summary: Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) is one of the most effective and scientifically supported treatments available for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It was developed specifically to help individuals recover from traumatic experiences such as combat exposure, military deployment trauma, sexual assault, serious accidents, violent attacks, and other life-threatening events.
    • Theoretical Basis: PE is based on decades of research in behavioral psychology, neuroscience, and trauma recovery. The treatment is grounded in the understanding that traumatic experiences can cause the brain to associate reminders of trauma with ongoing danger—even when a person is currently safe. ​Because of this, many individuals begin avoiding trauma-related memories, emotions, places, conversations, or activities. Unfortunately, avoidance prevents the brain from fully processing the traumatic event and learning that the danger is no longer present.
    • What PE Does: Prolonged Exposure Therapy helps “retrain” the brain and nervous system through gradual, structured therapeutic exposure to trauma-related memories and situations in a safe and controlled way. Over time, the emotional intensity and fear associated with the trauma begin to decrease, allowing healing and recovery to occur.
    • The Four Components of PE:
      • Education about PTSD and Trauma
      • Breathing and Emotional Regulation Skills
      • Imaginal Exposure
      • In Vivo Exposure
  • COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY [CBT]
    • Summary: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and effective forms of psychotherapy available today. CBT helps individuals understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another and how certain patterns may contribute to anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, stress, anger, or other emotional difficulties.
    • Basis:​ CBT is based on the understanding that the way we think affects the way we feel and behave. After difficult experiences or periods of stress, people can develop unhelpful patterns of thinking that reinforce emotional suffering and unhealthy behaviors.
    • What it does:  During CBT, individuals learn how to:
      • Recognize unhealthy thought patterns
      • Reduce self-criticism and catastrophic thinking
      • ​Improve emotional regulation
      • Develop healthier coping strategies
      • Reduce avoidance behaviors
      • Improve communication and relationship skills
      • Manage stress and anxiety more effectively
      • Build resilience and confidence
      • Respond to difficult situations in healthier ways
